The Fletcher Jones Foundation has awarded Ģ����Ƶ a $600,000 grant to establish the Fletcher Jones Foundation Digital Learning Lab in the Archbishop Alemany Library, President Mary B. Marcy announced today.

The Fletcher Jones Foundation Digital Learning Lab will enable Dominican to meet the unique and evolving needs of today's Net Generation students. The Lab will become a pivotal hub for student learning and success at the University.

“The Fletcher Jones Foundation has been an important long-term partner of Dominican and we greatly appreciate their generous support,” President Marcy said. “The Fletcher Jones Foundation Digital Learning Lab will become central to The Dominican Experience, our educational model that draws on existing institutional strengths to create a robust student experience that purposefully integrates the liberal arts and professional education.”

The Fletcher Jones Foundation Digital Learning Lab will provide a flexible space in which students can work individually and collaboratively on projects such as podcasts, websites, videos, multi-media presentations, and digital portfolios. Digital portfolios will allow students to showcase their academic and professional achievements, reflect on their community-engaged experiences, and present their culminating signature work.

The Fletcher Jones Foundation Digital Learning Lab is an essential element of a larger construction project slated for the Alemany Library to establish a physical site housing the interconnected components of The Dominican Experience. The Dominican Experience will ensure that all students receive personalized coaching, work closely with faculty, engage with the larger community, create a signature project, and create a digital portfolio of their work and experiences.

The Fletcher Jones Foundation has a long history of support for Dominican. The Foundation has awarded the University grants to establish the Fletcher Jones Computer Center, the Collaborative & Multimedia Learning Center, the Fletcher Jones Microbiology Lab, and the Fletcher Jones Foundation Central Clinical Simulation Suite.

Designed by architects Howard A. Friedman and Henry Schubart, the Alemany Library opened in 1963. It was presented with a 1964 Library Building Awards Program Award of Merit from the American Library Association and the American Institute of Architects. Dominican is re-envisioning the library’s technological and space configuration in order to best support the interactive learning required for student success. Plans include a two-story Center for the Dominican Experience featuring flexible seminar rooms, smaller breakout spaces for group work, larger dedicated meeting rooms, writing centers, tutoring and advising venues, and the Fletcher Jones Foundation Digital Learning Lab. A new open-area Learning Commons will feature moveable soft seating areas for informal gatherings, an outdoor café, and an outdoor classroom.
